Elin Wägner Society

The Elin Wägner Society was formed in 1990 in Berg, Småland. The Society aims to highlight the continuing relevance of Wägner’s work for peace, for the earth, and for women.

The Society has just over 400 members, men and women who come from all over Sweden and also from abroad. The newsletter Bergsluft enables us to stay in touch with each other.

In our series of booklets we publish a newly written or reprinted essay every year.

Elin Wägner lived at several different addresses in Stockholm, and various parts of Stockholm are represented in her novels. Vandring i Elin Wägners Stockholm (1993; A Walk in Elin Wägner’s Stockholm) takes us for a tour of her life and work. The Society has also worked for the publication of new editions of Väckarklocka (Alarm Clock) and Norrtullsligan (The Norrtull Gang). A facsimile edition of Wägner’s first book, Från det jordiska museet (1907; From the Human Museum), has also been published.

The Annual General Meeting usually takes place in Berg around the time of Wägner’s birthday, 16 May. In collaboration with St. Sigfrid’s folkhögskola, Växjö, the Society arranges annual Elin Wägner study days over a weekend in September.

A prize, Årets Väckarklocka (Alarm Clock of the Year), has been awarded every year since 1993 to a person or organisation working in the spirit of Elin Wägner. An annual Elin Wägner Prize is also awarded to a student at Växjö university.

The Society is taking part in the work to restore, maintain and keep open Lilla Björka, Elin Wägner’s house in Berg which is owned by a foundation, Stiftelsen Elin Wägners Lilla Björka. The house is open to the general public, and every year in July there is an art exhibition and a programme of lectures.

The annual subscription is SEK 100 and includes the booklet and the three issues of Bergsluft published every year.
